TAX CONTROVERSY | MID-LEVEL ASSOCIATE (4–7 YRS): Our client, a nationally recognized AmLaw 100 firm, is seeking a mid-level Associate to join its Tax Controversy Practice. The position offers the opportunity to work within a sophisticated tax group representing taxpayers in complex federal, state, and local tax controversy matters while collaborating closely with large transactional practices across offices. Hybrid work arrangement available.
The Associate will represent taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service, including Examination, the Independent Office of Appeals, Collections, and the Office of Chief Counsel, as well as before state revenue and tax agencies. Responsibilities include conducting legal research and analysis; drafting and reviewing substantive tax controversy documents such as penalty abatement requests, protest letters, petitions, motions, pleadings, and responses to audit information document requests and collection notices; managing multiple matters and deadlines under attorney supervision; maintaining daily client interaction and managing client relationships; and working effectively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. The ideal candidate will be able to distill complex tax issues into practical solutions and deliver timely, concise, and high-quality work product.
REQUIRED: Juris Doctor from an ABA-accredited law school; 4-7 years of civil tax controversy experience, preferably in a law firm environment; experience representing taxpayers before the IRS and state tax authorities; strong legal research, analytical, and drafting skills; exceptional written and verbal communication skills; excellent time management and organizational abilities; ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously; bar admission or eligibility for prompt admission in the jurisdiction of the resident office. LL.M. in Taxation; experience practicing before the U.S. Tax Court, U.S. District Courts, and/or the Court of Federal Claims is preferred.
